Requesting a general studies designation

In order for an ASU course to receive a General Studies designation, a proposal must be submitted to the ASU General Studies Council (GSC).

To request a General Studies Gold designation, the following must be submitted:

  1. Complete and submit the General Studies Gold Request Form in Kuali Build. A syllabus must be attached to the form which includes the designation-respective statement found in this document.
  2. Ensure that up-to-date course syllabus information is filled out on the course record in Kuali CM.

Consult General Studies Resources for all information regarding deadlines, FAQs, and things to consider before submitting a proposal. Note: Submissions must be received and reviewed by the Provost's Office, and have no outstanding issues, at least two weeks prior to a General Studies Council (GSC) meeting in order to be voted on at that meeting.

If there are any questions not answered in the resources, or issues with completing the form, please contact [email protected].

Please note:

Mandatory review for General Studies Maroon is frozen. Existing General Studies Maroon designations will persist without need for any mandatory review submissions. Please consider how your course may fit into a General Studies Gold designation.

Community college courses must meet eligibility criteria to be submitted.

Please review the University General Studies Requirements to help ensure that you are applying for the appropriate designation(s) based upon the content of your course.

Eligibility

  • Courses that have a current direct (one-to-one) equivalency to an ASU course that carries a general studies designation automatically inherit the general studies designation for the ASU course and require no further action.
  • Courses which have a current equivalency of "E" or "DEC" in the Course Equivalency Guide (CEG) may be considered for general studies evaluation.
  • Courses listed as (non-transferable) in the CEG are not eligible for consideration.

AGEC Courses

Community college courses taken as part of a completed AGEC satisfy all general studies requirements at ASU. ASU general studies designations are only relevant for students transferring course by course.

Deadlines

Community college courses approved by the GSC before the end of March will be effective with the Fall Course Equivalency Guide (CEG). Community college courses approved by the GSC before the end of October will be effective with the Spring Course Equivalency Guide (CEG).

Proposal Requirements and Submission

In order for a course to be considered by the GSC, the General Studies Gold Request Form must be submitted to the Provost's Office at least two weeks prior to a scheduled GSC meeting in order to be reviewed at that meeting.

The course syllabus must be attached, and it must include the designation-respective statement found in this document. Please note that if a course is crosslisted and/or shared, a letter of support from the chair/director of each department that offers the course is required for each designation requested.
